In September 2017, state of Uttar Pradesh started to upscale Ward by Ward Approach to City wide Sanitation through Govt. of Uttar Pradesh's (GoUP) Urban Development Department (UDD) that houses SBM-U & AMRUT, two flagship programs responsible for urban sanitation. Towards this, 75 District Programme Managers (DPMs) were taken on board by the Urban Development Department of GoUP to amplify the impact across 648 Municipal Bodies. WSUP provided initial training to the DPMs specifically focussing on the proven strategies from Vizag over two days in Lucknow in the first week of December 2017. The deployement of the trained DPMs resulted in formation of more than 10000 Ward Sanitation Committees for a total of about 12000 Wards. These Ward Sanitation Committees (WSCs) played a key role in the processs of Swachh Survekshan 2018 conducted over weeks starting in the first week of January 2018 until mid March 2018. It was time therefore to undertake the review of the progress and understand the challenges over quarter. It is with this view that UDD of GoUP organised one day review meeting on 6 March 2018 at Lucknow with technical support from WSUP to bring the lessons learnt over the previous quarter that drew contributions from all 75 DPMs (covering 648 Municipal Bodies). The event was also utilised to share global experience on urban WASH with a presentation from WSUP Global CEO, Neil Jeffery. The Mission Directors of AMRUT, SBM-U and Namami Gange presented the overview of their flagship programmes so that the DPMs can take back a fuller understanding of the urban sanitation and water supply portfolio. The presence of the Hon. Minister of Urban Development Government of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Suresh Khanna, Principal Secretary, Shri Manoj K.Singh, IAS and Secretary, Shri G. Priyadarshi added immense value to the deliberations.
